Genoa re-open talks for Wolverhampton striker Fabio Silva

Genoa have reportedly re-entered talks with Wolverhampton Wanderers over a potential transfer for striker Fabio Silva. The 22-year-old has been on Genoa’s radar since December, and the Italian club is now making a concerted effort to bring him to Stadio Luigi Ferraris before the transfer window closes.

Fabio Silva, born in Gondomar, Porto District, began his football journey with Porto before briefly moving to Benfica in 2015. He returned to Porto two years later, where he quickly established himself as a promising talent. Silva was part of Porto’s squad that triumphed in the 2018–19 UEFA Youth League. By February 2019, he had scored an impressive 20 goals in 26 matches for Porto’s under-19 team, which earned him a call-up to train with the first team under manager Sérgio Conceição.

During the second half of last season, Silva was loaned out to Rangers, where he made a significant impact. He featured in 25 matches for the Scottish club, scoring 6 goals. However, despite these contributions, Silva has found it difficult to secure a regular spot in Wolverhampton’s first team, struggling to replicate the early promise that made him one of Europe’s most exciting young prospects.

Currently, Silva’s market value stands at 11 million euros, according to Transfermarkt.com. This is a decline from his peak valuation of 25 million euros in October 2020, reflecting the challenges he has faced in his development.

Silva comes from a footballing family. His father, Jorge Silva, was a defensive midfielder who won the Portuguese league title with Boavista in 2001 and earned two caps for the Portugal national team. His older brother, also named Jorge, played as a defensive midfielder for Lazio, further emphasizing the family’s deep-rooted connection to the sport.

Genoa’s initial interest in Silva began last December when they made preliminary inquiries about the Portuguese striker. Although a move didn’t materialize at that time, Genoa has rekindled their pursuit of Silva. According to Alfredo Pedulla, a respected Italian journalist, the club is determined to secure Silva’s services before the end of the transfer window.

Silva’s professional career took off at Porto, where his performances attracted attention from top European clubs. In 2020, Wolverhampton Wanderers secured his signature for a hefty 40 million euros. Despite his early potential, Silva has struggled to become a regular starter at Molineux, prompting Wolves to consider offloading him.

With two years left on his contract, Wolves appear willing to entertain offers for Silva, particularly if the right bid comes along. Genoa values Silva’s versatility; his ability to play as both a central striker and a winger makes him a valuable addition to their attacking options.

The potential signing of Silva could trigger a series of moves in Serie A. His arrival at Genoa might pave the way for Nico Gonzalez to join Juventus and could see Albert Gudmundsson make a switch to Fiorentina, as Italian clubs continue to adjust their squads ahead of the new season.

Genoa’s renewed pursuit of Fabio Silva underscores their intent to strengthen their attack. With Wolves open to a deal, the coming days will determine whether Silva will continue his career in the Premier League or embark on a new chapter in Serie A.
