Chelsea make initial contact with Porto for Diogo Costa

In the modern world of football, the transfer season lasts year-round. While the literal transfers of players take place in the summer and winter windows, rumors, speculation and even concrete agreements can happen any time. As per British media, Chelsea have made initial contact with Porto for Diogo Costa.

Chelsea FC

The 23-year-old goalkeeper has played all his life at Porto. He has made his way through the youth system at the Portuguese club. His current deal runs out in the summer of 2027.

Diogo Costa has conceded 16 goals and provided 9 clean sheets in 19 games for Porto in all competitions this season.

He’s incredibly experienced for a 23-year-old and still has tons of room for growth. As a member of Portugal national football team, Costa won seven caps.

Costa is set to be a man in demand in the winter transfer window, with a host of clubs queuing up to pursue his signature.

The Blues have earmarked Porto goalkeeper as their target, with Graham Potter being a ‘huge admirer’ of the player.

Potter is a long term admirer of Costa and believes he can get the most out of the Portugal international.

Chelsea are in the market for just a handful of statement signings who can improve the first-team.

The 23-year-old goalkeeper man has the quality and the experience to make an immediate impact.

World Football Rumours

According to the report, “Chelsea are interested in Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa. Relevo are reporting that Chelsea have made initial contact over a deal for Costa, who has also been linked with Manchester United. Problematically for both clubs though, Costa recently put pen to paper on a new long-term contract with Porto. His new deal now contains a mega release clause worth an estimated £64million. The report also states that super-agent Jorge Mendes has recently approached Porto to declare his interest in brokering a blockbuster transfer this summer. Cristiano Ronaldo’s representative seems confident he can pull off a deal by flogging Costa to the Premier League or elsewhere.”

However, Diogo Costa won’t come cheap as his current contract runs out in the summer of 2027. The Blues will have to come up with the right proposal to convince Diogo Costa to join the club.

Porto are preparing to sell their goalkeeper should they receive a massive offer for him.

Good signing for Chelsea?

Diogo Costa stands as an excellent option for Chelsea. He has all the skillset required to be a success story at Stamford Bridge. Therefore, it makes sense for Graham Potter to step up his attempts to bring the Portuguese goalkeeper to Premier League side.

Chelsea fans would certainly love to see him arrive at the club.

It will be interesting to see whether Chelsea will make their move during the winter transfer window.
