Villarreal frontrunners to loan Brighton midfielder Billy Gilmour

Billy Gilmour is getting closer to Villarreal day by day as transfer talk continues to intensify. It’s claimed by British media that Villarreal are frontrunners to loan Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Billy Gilmour.

Brighton and Hove Albion FC

The Scotland international joined Brighton from Chelsea for a fee in the region of 8.33 million euros in September 2022. His contract expires in the summer of 2026.

He has featured in five matches for Brighton and Hove Albion this term, providing one assist in all competitions.

The 21-year-old has been touted as one of the brightest young prospects in Scotland. Gilmour has earned 16 senior caps for the Scotland national team but is yet to open his goal-scoring account for his nation.

The Scotland international is believed to be available for transfer, with Quique Setién now keen to bring him to Villarreal.

La Liga club are looking to sign a midfielder and have identified the 21-year-old as potential transfer target.

The Scotland international is thought to perfectly fit the profile of midfielder Setién wants to target in the winter transfer window.

The former Chelsea man would provide a good variety to Villarreal’s midfield.

World Football Rumours

According to the report, “Brighton midfielder Billy Gilmour is attracting La Liga interest. The Scottish Sun says Gilmour could be heading out on loan to La Liga with Villarreal leading the race for the Brighton midfielder. The 21-year-old joined the Seagulls on the last transfer deadline day, but the former Rangers starlet has yet to make any impact at the club. He’s failed to start a league game and has played a total of just 13 minutes of Premier League football in his four substitute appearances. Brighton are keen to send him out on loan in January to get some game time and several top flight Spanish clubs have shown interest in Gilmour – who won his 16th international cap last month when he started against Turkey in a 2-1 defeat and lasted 67 minutes. Villarreal boss Quique Setien has targeted Gilmour to join up in January with Villarreal currently sitting just outside the European places in La Liga. The former Barcelona boss replaced Unai Emery, who left for Aston Villa, in October and wants his own players in for the second half of the season.”

If Villarreal can agree on a loan fee with Brighton, the deal should be easy to complete.

It is claimed that the Seagulls are open to letting Gilmour go on loan.

Good signing for Villarreal?

A loan deal holds minimal risk and has the potential to offer handsome rewards.

Villarreal could benefit by signing Gilmour as the midfielder is one of the areas of concern for Setién.

A move to Villarreal is exactly what Billy Gilmour needs to reignite his career, and we hope he is able to do just that.

The Spanish club would likely much prefer a more experienced midfielder who can provide an immediate impact on the pitch. Whether or not he is truly needed at Villarreal is still debatable.
